Exploring AI at Nairobi International School (NIS)

A One-Afternoon Workshop to Build Teacher Fluency

On August 20, 2025, our team at Dejin (facilitated by in-house AI expert Shikoli Makatiani) led a professional development workshop at Nairobi International School (NIS). The aim was simple: help teachers build AI fluency—shared language, safe habits, and repeatable workflows. This post summarizes what we explored and practiced in training; any adoption decisions rest with NIS leadership.

We used a simple metaphor to structure the practice—three “AI roles” that educators can try during workshops:

  • Assistant for summaries, first drafts, and organizing notes
  • Strategist for planning, options, and structured critique
  • Creator for lesson assets, quizzes, and student-friendly explainers

This metaphor is a teaching aid, not a policy.

What we explored (hands-on)

  • Setting up lightweight shared workspaces for prompts/examples
  • A quick workflow audit to spot where minutes and mistakes hide
  • Practicing the roles in sandbox exercises (not production use)
  • A simple prompting cycle: Prep → Prompt → Polish for tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot

What teachers took away in 90 minutes

  • A shared vocabulary for talking about AI support in school work
  • Reusable prompt templates for lesson design, communication, and planning
  • Safety habits for privacy, accuracy, and bias—treating outputs like a draft that always gets human review

Why this matters

AI fluency helps educators make informed choices later—what to try, what to avoid, and where guardrails belong. It’s about saving time and improving quality without compromising professional judgment.

What’s next

NIS leadership will decide if and how to incorporate any of these practices. Our role was to introduce options and build confidence.
